Description
A black swan (Cygnus atratus) moves gracefully toward me with it's feathers ruffled and it's red beak making a stark contrast to it's black head as it leaves a series of ripples in its wake.
It is found mostly in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia but this one was in a small pond in south Florida. The species was hunted to the point of extinction in New Zealand, but have large populations in Australia.
The black swan's habitat crosses fresh, brackish, salt water lakes, swamps and rivers. They prefer permanent wetlands which can include small ponds such as the one where I found this one.
